About the Community Visitors Scheme

The Community Visitors Scheme is a Federal Government initiative that was implemented to improve the lives of elderly residents in aged care homes who have been identified as lonely and socially isolated through a lack of visitors.

The Community Visitors Scheme provides not-for-profit organisations with the resources to source appropriate volunteers to become friends with these elderly people. The Community Visitors Scheme arranges volunteers from the community to visit selected residents on a regular, one-on-one basis. The volunteer is asked to provide one hour a fortnight of time and companionship for their resident friend.

Prospective volunteers are subject to a police check at the cost of Logan CVS. This police check is applicable to CVS only and protects the residents, the volunteer and the aged care home.

Cultural barriers and Languages other than English

Aged care residents come from a variety of different social and cultural backgrounds. Therefore, community visitors from all backgrounds are welcome. Many elderly people from different cultures can lose the ability to speak their second language. For many, this mean the loss of English leaving them culturally isolated, so volunteers who speak any language other than English are highly sought.

Do you require a Community Visitor?

Any resident whose quality of life could be improved by the companionship of a regular community visitor can be referred to the Community Visitors Scheme. If you know someone who you think could benefit from the friendship of a community visitor anywhere in Australia, please contact us here - tracey@logancvs.org.au
